Obituary for Leonid "Leo" Surak

Leonid "Leo"  Surak
Leonid “Leo” Surak, age 89 of South River passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at CareOne at East Brunswick. Born in Belarus he had resided in South River for the past 67 years. Before his retirement he was employed as a Buyer for Hercules Incorporated in Parlin and was part of their 10 and 25 year clubs. He was a US Army Veteran from 1952 – 1954 with the 7th Army Headquarters 40th Signal Battalion as a personal specialist and interpreter and was ranked a Corporal, was a member of the American Legion Post 214, the VFW Post 1451, was Past Commander from 2000 – 2004 and Past County Commander from 2006 – 2007, was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3001, was a contributing member of the Democratic National Committee and a Democratic County Committeeman and belonged to the Belarusan-American Association.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years the former Lillian Grusza Surak, his daughter Alexandra Hewett of Baltimore, MD, his grandsons Grant and Aidan, and his siblings Anatol Surak of Maryland and Stasia Sumski of South River.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday 11am at Corpus Christi RC Church in South River with a burial to follow at St Mary’s Cemetery in East Brunswick. Arrangements are under the direction of the Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Avc, South River.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Leo’s name to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA, 02241.
