Richard J. Zihala, age 91, passed away Thursday November 16th, 2017 peacefully at his home. He was born in the Vailsburg section of Newark before moving to Sayreville in 1954. He served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII; after which he made the Navy his career, retiring on March 1st 1963. After completing 20 years of continuous active service, he attained the rank of Senior CPO.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Victories R.C. Church in Sayreville. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
He is predeceased by his wife Marie Zihala, his parents, Andrew and Theresa Zihala and his brothers Robert and Joseph Zihala. Surviving is his daughter Teresa Kasubinski, and his sons, Richard, David and Steven Zihala. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jennifer Wolchok, Mark Kasubinski, Krystal Zihala and his great-grandchildren Kyle, Blake and Gabriel.

Calling Hours will be at the Carmen F Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane Parlin, NJ 08859 on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.
Funeral services will be Monday 9:30am at Our Lady of Victories R.C. Church with a burial to follow at New Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation can be made in Richard’s name to any Veteran’s charity of your choosing.
