Strongman

To many people at work; Jan was a hard worker, friendly and always there to lend a hand in any way. There is a little known fact about Jan that I would like to share: he was physically strong. It went beyond the strength of a firm handshake that comes with a great character.

Sometimes at work; I would need help with a project.  One night; Jan was helping me replace a 20 horsepower motor. I needed Jan to lift the motor a moment so I could put the chain hoist to it. Jan picked up the motor, threw it up on his shoulder like a bag of salt and carried it to the top of a six foot ladder and held it in place while I put the bolts in. The motor weighed 300 lbs.

On another occasion; I needed to move a 75 hp motor thru a door onto the roof.  Jan picked up the motor and moved it out the door onto the roof.  This motor weighed over 900 lbs which was heavy enough for four men to lift, let alone the two of us. I could not have done this job without him.

Jan was the strongest man I ever met and I’ll miss him.
